Here are the supplies you will need to make your own yarn bowl.

How to Make a DIY Yarn Bowl?

Let’s see step by step how to make the yarn bowl.

  1. Form the design cutout for a yarn bowl

Take a piece of paper and make the design that you would want on the bowl. There must be an angle or a loop which would keep your yarn in the proper place. Also, remember that the jigsaw blade you have must have the ability to follow the exact same pattern. Your patterns for swirl should not be too much narrow or sharp.

  1. Transfer the design to your bowl

Hold or tape the paper design onto the bowl using a transfer paper piece between the bowl and design. Use a pen to draw or trace that design on the bowl. You can also use a closed mechanical pencil for tracing. Now lift that transfer paper a little while holding the paper in its place from the second end. This step is to make sure that the design has been transferred on the bowl successfully.

If the design could not be traced, then lay it back on the bowl and trace again.

  1. Cut the swirl pattern on the bowl

Now it is time to cut the design. Just do it slowly and calmly, maybe get a little ambidextrous. It would be better to start your jigsaw at high speed but move the blade a little slow, which would give you reasonable control.

Clamp your bowl to one solid surface. In case of shaking bowl, use your other hand to hold it tightly. Cut little ways using jigsaw according to your design on the first side then cut all the short sections. Use this similar technique again and again while you move into swoop.

While cutting in the swoop, there might be a need to cut the central area before making the outer edges smooth with the blade. Sometimes the wood of the bowl is soft; therefore, cutting is not that difficult. Also, do not put too much pressure on the suspended part of the wood. If this wood breaks off, your project may flop. The wood part can easily be cleaned with some sanding.

Take some bamboo skewers, then wrap a small segment of the 60 grit sandpaper on it. Put those into the cut shaped design. Begin the sanding. After some passes, check if you will have to put less or more pressure far making all the edges smooth.

If there is a requirement of getting in the tighter swirl, then remove a skewer. Repeat all the same procedure using grit sandpaper to make the cuts smooth. Using sandpaper with high grit gives an edge for good preparation for the stain. Use a tack cloth to wipe down the dust generated from sanding. And there you have a customized DIY yarn bowl perfect for your requirements.
